What is Gratitude?
Gratitude is the act of showing appreciation and feeling thankful for the gifts, favors, or blessings received. It involves taking the time to remember and reflect on the good things in your life—whether they stem from events, people, or even positive thoughts.

Gratitude is not just a feeling; it is an attitude and a habit cultivated over time. It grows as you go through life’s experiences, becoming a practice of deeply reflecting on your journey and situations.

In every one of our lives, we can find reasons to be thankful if we take a moment to pause and reflect.

Why Is It Hard to Be Grateful Sometimes?

Gratitude can feel difficult when life doesn’t go as planned or when challenges arise:

  1. Expectations not being met:

    • When things don’t happen as quickly as we hope.

    • When prayers seem unanswered or delayed.

  2. Suffering Loss:

    • The physical loss of a loved one.

    • Financial or material loss.

  3. Disappointment:

    • When plans don’t work out as envisioned.

  4. Pride:

    • A common barrier to gratitude is pride, expressed in thoughts like:

      • "I deserve better."

      • "Why me?"

      • "I don’t like this."

Often, we struggle with gratitude when we take our eyes off God and focus solely on ourselves. A lack of understanding of who God is and His capabilities can also hinder thankfulness.

Gratitude begins with knowing who God is and recognizing that He is sovereign, faithful, and good. God protects, provides, heals, and delivers. He is merciful and unchanging.

The Bible offers an example in the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 (John 6:1–14). With only five loaves and two fishes, Jesus gave thanks, and the small meal multiplied to feed the multitude. Gratitude unlocks the miraculous.

True thankfulness is more about the state of the heart than verbal expression. It flows from within, reflecting a heart of trust and confidence in God.

Why Should We Live with an Attitude of Gratitude?

  1. It’s a Command:

    • "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever." (Psalm 136:1)

    • "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

  2. It Creates an Atmosphere of Peace:

    • Gratitude invites the peace of Christ to rule in your heart (Colossians 3:15).

  3. It Reflects God’s Work in Your Life:

    • Gratitude shows that you recognize God’s faithfulness and provision.

  4. It Brings Multiplication:

    • Thankfulness paves the way for God to multiply blessings, just as He did with the loaves and fishes.

  5. It Strengthens Confidence in God:

    • Gratitude reaffirms trust in God’s goodness, even in challenging times.

  6. It Fosters Joy:

    • Living with gratitude keeps you in a state of joy and contentment.

How Can We Develop an Attitude of Gratitude?

  1. Dedicate Time for Reflection:

    • Spend time reflecting on God’s blessings in your life.

  2. Build a Gratitude Journal:

    • Write down the things you’re thankful for daily or weekly.

  3. Study More About Who God Is:

    • Dive into scripture to deepen your understanding of God’s character and promises.

  4. Regularly Reflect on Your Life:

    • Take moments to pause and recognize how far God has brought you.

Gratitude is a powerful tool for shifting your perspective and aligning your heart with God’s will. It’s not just about saying “thank you” but living a life of thanksgiving. When we cultivate an attitude of gratitude, we create an atmosphere where peace, joy, and confidence in God abound.

Take a moment today to reflect on the goodness of God in your life and choose to live with a heart of gratitude.
